Fort Fisher, NC

Fort Fisher was once famous for being home to Robert Harrill, the Fort Fisher Hermit, a man who hitchhiked to the area in 1955 and lived there in an abandoned WWII bunker until his death in 1972. Visitors came from all over the country to see the hermit and he became the second most popular tourist attraction in North Carolina. Nowadays people come here for the salt marsh and the sand, but most donít come in early February. I saw few visitors on the marsh trails and only a single park ranger in an SUV patrolling the beach where a cold, constant breeze was blowing off the water.
